Community Service Opportunity

The Hubbard Public Library Board of Trustees is currently accepting letters of interest for a new member to fill a vacancy on the Board. This position will begin April 2019.

The Hubbard Public Library is the center of lifelong learning for its community, a village rich in educational, cultural, economic, and social diversity. The Library is deeply woven into the fabric of the community and is committed to protecting individual access to global information. The Library strives to foster discovery, intellectual growth, and creativity.

The Board generally meets on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 PM in the Schafer Conference Room at the Library.  Additional Board Committee meetings take place throughout the year.  All meetings are open to the public, in accordance with Ohio’s Sunshine Law. 
 
Board members serve without remuneration and must be residents of Trumbull County. Hubbard residents will be given preference.

Mats of Love Dedication Program

The Mats of Love project at Hubbard Public Library began with a woman coming into the library and being brave enough to ask at the reference desk where she could get a free shower. The courage that takes is to be respected. She was referred to me and I was able to get her to an agency that could assist, but I felt that we needed to be doing more.  The following week, the Youngstown Blue Coats spoke about their distribution missions for people experiencing homelessness. Mention was made of Kim  and Mac Pasco and the mats of love they were creating. Kim agreed to teach any interested patrons how to crochet the mats. Hubbard Public Library would become a creation and donation site for the mat program.

Kim taught our group how to crochet the mats and prepare the plarn. Multiple generations of volunteers came in to cut, loop and crochet the bags into mats. Teens came in each week and did the preparations as part of our Summer Reading program to earn points to attend our annual overnight lock in at the library (this was just one of their summer reading sessions). Adult patrons came in to crochet and that is where the magic happens: adults and teens sharing stories, talking about life while creating items to comfort others. Each group learned about the other. Each group found new traits and characteristics to respect in one another.

During the course of those 8 months that the project grew: a wonderful woman crocheted and donated 12 soap bags with soap for distribution, a large number of crocheted hats were brought in that were crocheted by a group of incarcerated individuals and two local community groups requested our pattern and instruction to start the project on their own.  This all resulted in 44 mats being donated To Youngstown Blue Coats at our dedication program on December 4 at Hubbard Public Library. More than 20 of our volunteers of every age joined us as we heard from Kim and Mac Pasko about the beginning of their mat project. Patty Summers spoke about the Youngstown Blue Coats and the Hubbard Library Coordinator of Teen and Patron technology Services, Amy Zell, distributed canvas totes and t-shirts screen printed in the teen room with a yarn hear t design and the words: warm hearts changing lives at Our Place in the HPL Teen Room  as a thank you to the volunteers.

The program will continue as long as volunteers are available. During winter months, teens participate after school at-will and adults come in on Tuesdays at 1:30 pm.

Our Place (Teen Room) and MakeSpace 101 Programs at HPL

The Hubbard Public Library provides free and easy access to information, ideas, books, and technologies that enrich, educate, and empower the individuals of our diverse community. Our Place at HPL (the teen room) is Safe Zone certified and is intended to provide a safe place for teens to engage in their community.

Our MakerSpace 101 programs are intended to provide basic instruction and/or introduction into all things MakerSpace. Whether it be learning a simple way to construct a cookie cutter for 3D printing or learning to code, all of the MakeSpace 101 programs are introductory and based on beginning skills.

Code Club for ages 9-13 gives our younger patrons the opportunity to work on learning to code and to develop their own video games, programs, websites, and more. It is a fun and creative session where the children are encouraged to collaborate, use critical thinking skills, and laugh with one another as much as possible. Registration is necessary and seating is limited. Email amy@beyond-books.org to register.

 Girls Who Code is national nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the gender gap in technology. At the club meetings, 6th-12th grade girls explore coding and community enrichment in a fun and friendly environment.  Each session will collaborate on and create a community project. Join us Wednesdays at 4:30 pm and watch for an additional evening session beginning in February. Registration is required and seating is limited. Email amy@beyond-books.org to register.

JOB OPPORTUNITY

Hubbard Public Library seeks an energetic, positive, service-oriented individual to supervise our Adult Services team and department.

Position: Adult Services Librarian Supervisor

• Full time including some evenings and weekends.
• Compensation: Starting salary $34,549, benefits package offered

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree, Library experience preferred

Required Knowledge and Skills:

·         Ability to communicate with and serve the public effectively

·         Willingness to gain knowledge of all types of library materials, equipment, and services

·         High level of dependability and willingness to accept responsibility

·         High degree of analytical ability

Responsibilities:

·         Supervises Adult Department: scheduling, evaluation, individual task assignments, and training as needed

·         Establishes departmental operating procedures

·         Submits annual budget requests to Director

·         Provides, supervises, and assists with Adult programming and outreach services and other public relations activities as needed

·         Provides reference service, filling patron requests for information using various resources

·         Assists and instructs users in the use of library materials, services, catalogs, and equipment

·         Oversees Homebound service

·         Maintains the adult paperback collection and supervises adult print collection

·         Manages public display cases and Adult Department displays

·         Updates monthly statistical report on computer database usage, programming, and other adult statistics as requested

·         Assists with young adult programming as assigned

·      Contributes press releases and news articles for publication

·         Performs other related duties as required

What Happened, Amelia?

An invitation to our library families: come to the Hubbard Public Library on Saturday, April 8th and meet Amelia Earhart – an aviator from the days when women were not considered capable of such pursuits. Carol Starre-Kmiecik has been performing on stage in a variety of re-enactment roles. She uses original scripts, sometimes humorous, sometimes sad – always telling the life stories of famous American women. After her Amelia show, Carol will share insights how she prepares for her re-enactments. This performance is part of the Library’s Can’t Make Me Saturday events, and is open to all ages. Amelia will make her appearance at 1 p.m
